The 2009 Northern Alberta Open took place at the Edmonton Chess Club on February 28, 2009 to March 1, 2009. Their chess club can hold about 60 tournament players. There were 57 players playing in this tournament with the winner of the tournament qualifying to play in the Alberta Closed Championship in April 2009. The winner of the tournament on tiebreak was IM Edward Porper.
The tournament was directed by Micah Hughey who did an excellent job.
