The 2009 Welcome Back Open was held on September 26, 2009 at the Grande Prairie Chess Club. We had 6 players competing in the "official" opening tournament of the 2009 - 2010 season.
Wade Caughlin starts out the year as the GP Chess Club's highest rated player. His pre-tournament rating was 1923. He is clearly on his way to becoming Grande Prairie's first 2000 rated player as his play continually improves with each tournament.
The other players in this event were Tim Pradzinski (1879), Dean Johnson (1780), Chris White (1772), Elroy Deimert (1690) and David Miller (1628). Chris White once again travelled in from LaCrete, Aberta and is hoping to play in more of our events this year! Chris is a really great addition to our lineup as he always comes to win!
It looked as if Wade Caughlin was going to coast to his first victory of the season as he beat Chris White and Tim Pradzinski in his first 2 games. However, he met a road block in his last round game in the name of Dean Johnson. With ths win, Dean became the sole winner of the 2009 Welcome Back Open. Congratulations Dean on a fine performance!
