2011 March Open #1

The 2011 March Open #1 was held on March 12, 2011 at the Grande Prairie Chess Club.  We had 6 players competing in the tournament.

Up and coming Alberta Junior Champion, David Miller, was the favorite to win the tournament as he was the highest rated player in the tournament.  Unfortunately, his recent nemesis, Chris Mercredi, showed up with his A game.  Chris beat David in the first round with a fine performance.

Tim Pradzinski almost lost his game to Rick Braitenbach in the first round when he blundered a piece only to have Rick blunder right back.  Tim then went on to beat Elroy Deimert and Chris Mercredi in the next 2 games to win the tournament with a perfect score of 3 / 3.  Tim's game against Chris Mercredi was interesting in that Chris should have won the game and the tournament!  Check out that game and try to figure out where Chris went wrong.

This tournament saw Chris Kaut play in his first tournament.  Chris who is brand new to our club had the daunting task of have keep notation and play with a clock (both of which are fairly new to him).

The results were as follows:

  1. Tim Pradzinski  (1947)  -  3/3
  2. Chris Mercredi  (1653)  -  2/3
  3. David Miller  (1965)  -  2/3
  4. Elroy Deimert  (1673)  -  1/3
  5. Rick Braitenbach  (1328) - 1/3
  6. Chris Kaut (Unr)  -  0/3
